10 Indoor Plants that Are Hard to Kill

SUCCESSFULLY GROWING INDOOR PLANTS

Adding plants inside your home or apartment is a great way to bring the outdoors inside. Not only can this do wonders for your mood, but it can also help to purify your air and beautify your space. However, many of us have busy schedules that can make it challenging to properly care for plants indoors. Fortunately, there are plenty of indoor plants that are surprisingly hard to kill. Here are 10 of our favourites.

1. Fishbone Fern

Native to New South Wales, this plant looks great in hanging pots or baskets, thanks to its long, draping fronds. Keep your fern in a well-lit spot that is out of direct sunlight, and water only when the soil feels dry.

2. Spider Plant

Spider plants are incredibly hardy and can survive in just about any lighting conditions. Wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. When ‘baby spiders’ start to sprout off from the ‘mother’, let them develop some small roots before transplanting them to a new pot to start growing even more spider plants.

3. Snake Plant

Also called mother-in-law’s tongue, these plants can survive weeks or even months without watering. As a result, you don’t have to worry if you are a bit forgetful. They do well in both dim and bright light so feel free to place them just about anywhere.

4. Chain of Hearts

The chain of hearts, also called the string of hearts, is the perfect choice for a well-lit bookcase. The long, delicate vines will cascade down the shelves, and the heart-shaped leaves are as cute as can be. Make sure the soil drains well and only water when dry.

5. Chinese Evergreen

These plants don’t like direct sunlight and don’t need much light at all to thrive. However, they do like to be kept warm so place them in an area that tends to stay above 15 degrees. Water whenever the soil feels dry to the touch.

6. Devil’s Ivy

This type of indoor plant loves to climb using its aerial roots. You can stick a wooden post in the pot to help it along. Devil’s Ivy likes bright, indirect sunlight, and it only needs to be watered when the soil is dry.

7. Dracaena

This indoor plant will give your home a bit of tropical flair. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, and make sure the pot drains well. The leaves of this plant are toxic, though, so take care if you have children or pets at home.

8. Philodendron

Known for its large, glossy leaves, this plant lets you know what it needs. If the leaves start to yellow, your plant is getting too much sun. Water as soon as the top few centimetres of soil have dried out.

9. Aloe

In addition to requiring minimal care, aloe plants also have numerous health benefits. They are great at purifying the air and the juice inside is great for soothing sunburns, rashes, dry skin and other skin conditions. Make sure the pot drains well and water sparingly.

10. Rubber Tree

This indoor plant’s lush, shiny leaves are sure to impress your mates, and you won’t have to do much to keep them looking their best. Water when the top few centimetres of soil are dry and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth periodically to remove any dust.
